My best guess is (a) Swapping (memory shortage) or (b) You're using Digital
Unix and consuming too many file-descriptors, system-wide.

Once a Digital Unix box hits a certain mark of open filedescriptors (across
all processes), then it suddenly seems to start thrashing somewhere deep down.
I've had the number 1800 quoted at me, but it could be lower or higher for
some configurations.

If not that, then I would guess that your box is thrashing due to the process
getting too big for it's britches. What sort of memory usages are you seeing
around those points?

Did you read the documentation AND the FAQ?
If not, I'll probably still answer your question, but my patience will
be limited, and you take the risk of sarcasm and ridicule.
