Squid 1.2 - Delay in sending to user ?

I am currently setting up a Squid 1.2 box after having used 1.1.xx for
quite some time. In testing users have complained that this box is very
slow.

Some links, you hit them and nothing happens. Hit stop, click on the
link again and it comes up straight away.
