        Try doing a man on mke2fs and find out what switches you use to
change the block size from the default( corrcet me if I am wrong) 4096. I
run ext2 on a 25gig news server and use 2048 size blocks which are a nice
compromise between space usage and performance degradation due to excess
fragmentation.
