Inverse Caching Proxy question

Hey, I'm running an inverse proxy to essentially mirror a web site
that's getting way too many hits for my littel iDSL line at home.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be making use of its cache, so it's not
helping me. Any suggestions? The web server is Apache, and I can see
that squid is at least caching stuff, but it immediately releases. Apache
is configured with CacheNegotiatedDocs.
