I reckon, you are running a squid compiled with async-io enabled on a
Linux system. Linux will show a process for every thingy which Linux calls
thread. Don't worry, "top" should report substantial activity for only
one, and most of the memory pages should be shared. If you still want to
lower it, you need to reduce the number of threads and recompile Squid.
Henrik has got a patch which lets you define the number of threads while
running configure - maybe it is already incorporated into the production
version.
