For parents I prefer to use only TCP.

cache_peer par1 parent 8080 0 no-query no-digest no-netdb-exchange
round-robin

cache_peer par2 parent 8080 0 no-query no-digest no-netdb-exchange
round-robin

peer_connect_timeout 5s

prefer_direct off

I see no use in using UDP ECHO nowdays, except possibly if your parents
are on very unreliable links, but even then the UDP ECHO pinging most
likely only makes the links even less useable..
