Yes. I'm not sure what the pratical or hard limit is, but you can change
the max files in /proc/sys/fs/file-max (default: 8192).

Don't forget to set your per-process limit ('ulimit -n') and FD_SETSIZE
(in /usr/include/bits/types.h on Debian) to the new limit.
