Clarification:

We are much more selfish than that

The persons developing Squid on their spare time develop what they find
personal interest in developing for the fun of doing so. The Squid
project as such does not hire a single person for the purpose of making
Squid better for others.

Sometimes one of the spare time developers may find a requested feature
interesting to implement and does so for free when having the lust of
implementing the feature, but there is obviously no guarantees so will
happen at any time even if the chances sometimes are relatively high.

Other developments are paid for by companies having certain needs.
Sometimes the work is done by the same programmers who also enjoy
working on Squid for the fun of it, sometimes by other programmers.
Quite often the result of this is then contributed back to the
community, both as a way to give back some of all the benefits received
by using Squid and as a way to avoid having to spend much more efforts
on maintaining and fixing the same modifications as new Squid versions
become available.

Sometimes there is a combination of the two. A project being worked on
both by developers paid by a company and spare time developers working
on the same project because they find personal interest in the issues
involved.

Henrik
