Have you read the memory requirements for Squid?

Squid FAQ 8.11 How much memory do I need in my Squid server?
<url:http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ-8.html#ss8.11>

Also, if only having a single drive then the maximum thruput of your Squid
cache will quickly be limited by the seek time of your drive to at most 50
req/s, significantly slower if your drive is not the fastest possible or
if you are short on memory.
