Why does Squid not cache these pages?

Yes, I have read the FAQ. Specifically, section 12.23 "How come some
objects do not get cached?"

I am having a very hard time figuring out why a great many of the pages
that my Squid server retrieves are instantly RELEASED. SpecifiCALLY, I've
used netcat to retrieve www.3com.com and www.slashdot.org

These two sites are examples of pages being instantly RELEASED. Using
netcat I've checked the headers and they do not contain:
Cache-Control: Private
Cache-Control: No-Store
Cache-Control: No-Cache
Vary or Authorization headers.

A view of my access.log shows that they returned a code 200. So why are
they not being cached? I'm really stumpoed on this as I have 3.5 Gig HD
and 128 RAM and am the only person using this cache right now. Any help
you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
