I doubt it is, but it may.

You said your problem was "Zero sized reply".

This problem is timeout when using IE4.

My gess is that your problem (zero sized reply) is caused by a firewall
which prevents Squid from going direct and that something in your
configuration overrides never_direct for these requests (probably
minimum_direct_hops).
