Hi!

Thanks for all the many replies. I think it may boil down to two possible
causes: (1) running out of file descriptors and (2) something to do with
TCP

================================
(1) Running out of file descriptors:

Under this scenario .... is there a log somewhere (cache.log?) which will
state that I am really running out of it? I checked my access.log,
cache.log and store.log ... and nothing about low or losing file
descriptors.

But with all the help from Michael, Henrik, and Dancer .. I am ready to
recompile my kernel with all the changes in place .... btw ... is 2.2.6
newer than 2.2.12 or the other way around .... somewhere I got confused with
the numbering .. because the last kernel version I used was 2.0.36. If I
got it right .. the numbering goes 2.2.1, 2.2.12 ... 2.2.2 ... 2.2.6 .. or
did I get it wrong.

Also ... do I need to apply alan cox's patch for kernel 2.2.6?

(2) TCP

I did what Darren instructed and did a netstat -a | grep 8085 ...... I
didn't get that much SYN_ACK ... but I did get a lot of FIN_WAIT1 and
FIN_WAIT2 with specific IP addresses. I then checked /proc/sys/net/ipv4/
... and I found two files: tcp_retries1 and tcp_retries2 .... are these the
settings for the FIN_WAITs?

Btw .. in case I change something under this directory ... should I do
anything else ... does it take effect automatically .. or is a reboot
enough?

=============================

I have not done anything yet ..... as I continue to make some more
isolations of the problem. At least i'm down to 2 and hopefully down to 1 by
tomorrow.

Thanks again guys ... if u have other suggestions ... i'd appreciate it very
much!
