One of the more useful statistics is the "Storage LRU Expiration Age". You
can get it by running the client program on the squid server, eg

        /path/to/squid/bin/client mgr:info

It has been quoted on this list that the optimal age is about 1 week. If
your cache reports shorter than that, you need more cache. If it's more,
you already have more than enough cache. If you need to increase your
cache size, unfortunately I can't tell you by how much. I guess you could
use the ratio of your reported age compared to 1 week. eg if your age is
3.5 days, double your cache.

You could rotate your logs daily and then process them with one of the
many tools available.
