Yes, actually we've tried this, but for some reason (perhaps a misconfiguration on my part), squid does not attempt to connect to its parent(s) when the box's direct line to the Internet goes down. And then the opposite config also gives the same problem: it doesn't go direct when the line to the parent is down. Using Squid2.4STABLE6. I'll try testing it again to be sure, though. Thanks.
