took it out, still didn't work. looked closer at the cache.log, and noticed
that it couldn't resolve my parent. "what?", i ask. oh look, someone took
the parent's entry out of /etc/hosts on that machine and didn't say anything
to me. the joys of having more than one person admin machines. put it back in
(this time with comments about not removing it) and it works great. well,
except that i can get to www.playboy.com, which means smartfilter isn't working
right, but that's not your problem. ;)

however, i do get this:

2003/06/24 09:23:42| storeAufsOpenDone: (11) Resource temporarily unavailable
2003/06/24 09:23:42| /squid/s00/00/00/0000003B
2003/06/24 09:23:42| storeSwapOutFileClosed: dirno 0, swapfile 0000003B, errflag=-1
        (11) Resource temporarily unavailable

and hitting google with that doesn't really turn anything good up as far as
a solution that i've found so far. the closest thing is maybe the number of
aufs threads, but the one guy set his to 128 and that didn't seem to help him
at all.

so that brings up the question of what is a good number for --enable-async-io?
i have it set to 32, but keep in mind, when this thing goes live, cache_mem is
going to be set as high as the machine can handle, as async-io should probably
be set as high as is reasonable as well. this machine has 2G of ram, and it's
sole purpose in life is to be a proxy running squid/smartfilter.

here is some output for you:

brian@ghsl011ptlge$ /usr/local/sbin/squid -v
Squid Cache: Version 2.5.STABLE1
configure options: --prefix=/usr/local --disable-dependency-tracking --enable-async-io=32 --with-aio --enable-snmp --enable-ssl --with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl --enable-poll
brian@ghsl011ptlge$ uname -a
SunOS ghsl011ptlge 5.8 Generic_108528-16 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-2

thanks!!
